SPIRAL (2022)

SPIRAL is an experimental perception of sound through a cochlear implant simulation. The artists worked with two cochlear implant users, surrealich’s mother Alma Ruiz de Alegria and Julia Hann von Weyhern, to reveal their way of hearing in an amplified and experimental way. The project was created closely with their input and experience.

The multimedia project is presented through paintings by Nuria Ruiz de Alegria, surrealich (designs) and Julia, and a film by sound artists surrealich and critical P and film artists Maya Zaretski and Pablo Dunkerly. Nuria Ruiz de Alegria, the sister of Alma, gave us her perspective of SPIRAL through her water-color paintings. For her second collaboration with surrealich, Alegria sent her paintings from Madrid to Berlin to add another artistic perspective to the topic.
