Filming was hard. A day full of emotions, stress and problem solving. Being the first time I was doing a film taught me how much patience you need to get every take right. I also felt it was really surreal as we had the power of recording the audio and Maya recording the video, however not until the editing day we would know what we had created.
Trying to understand and re-create Julia’s perception was hard. I was trying to push Julia to ask herself questions. Like what did she feel? And how could she recreate it and show it while filming. Sometimes cameras can make someone unconsciously not act naturally, which I knew from my own experience but seeing it in another person showed me and made me aware of all the unconscious things that make me act in certain ways. Just a curious fact. I was really thankful for her participation in putting time into this project. She told us how this project made her think more about her own self and her sensations of life through her cochlear implants.
The most interesting thing for me was recreating the power of “on” and “off”. My mother, for example, always says that she disconnects from the world when going to bed with my father snoring or when situation’s were noisy or problematic and she just needed to switch off for a while.
I was also lucky as my mother has a website where she and other hipacustic people write blogs. This was really helpful as we could put more detail in some scenarios. For example, the fact that they can’t sense sound especially if the sound comes from behind them. How surreal is it to adapt to unperceived sounds. Seeing these detailed perceptions were shocking and really made me learn to be patient and learn how to try and see what you can't see.

The editing was very unnerving as neither of us had any real experience. However, we were lucky as I had the best editing friend that I knew was going to express what we wanted to express through fonts and edits. Pablo Dunkerly, thank you, for interpreting my words and creating such an experimental and profound take on them. We sat down together for long hours eating snacks and laughing a lot!
While the editing was in process, the audio and designs for media were in the making. Not only that but my aunt Nuria Ruiz de Alegria, my secret weapon, was creating her perception of the project through water colour paintings.
My aunt, to whom I am so grateful to express my ideas and perceptions through her paintings. What I most love about creators (not only artistic ones) is the way in which they portray other people’s ideas. Another of the key learnings and conclusions reached during this project is the value of sharing an idea with people so that they can enrich a project even more through their own personal skills. It really gives you goosebumps and an emotional buzz to see how other people embrace your project adding their own personal layers. Also, the fact that my aunt is the sister of my mother meant that she had a personal motivation in trying to express how her sister felt through her art.
Next up.. audio ,media movement, the exposition and emotions
